MATES & Working Holiday Maker — quick guide

MATES program (India only) — Subclass 403 stream

  • Who it’s for: Indian graduates & early-career professionals in targeted fields (renewables, mining, engineering, ICT, AI, fintech, ag-tech).
  • Stay length: up to 2 years in Australia.
  • How it opens: pre-application ballot. If selected, you’re invited to apply.
  • Program cap: ~3,000 places/year (subject to settings).
  • Good to know: no employer sponsor needed to enter; if you do have one, consider 482/186.

Working Holiday Maker (WHM) — 417 & 462

Two youth-mobility streams let you holiday, work and study short-term. India uses 462 and must enter a ballot for the first visa. Pakistan isn’t currently on 417/462; consider Student 500Skilled PREmployer 482/186, or National Innovation 858.
