Work hours: Generally up to 48 hours per fortnight during teaching periods; unlimited in scheduled breaks. Postgraduate research settings differ.
Onshore switches: From 1 July 2024, many Visitor (600) and Temporary Graduate (485) holders cannot apply onshore for a Student visa—case-by-case assessment needed.
Financial capacity: The living-cost benchmark has been uplifted (currently around AUD 29,710) and is reviewed periodically.
Visa application charge: Increased in 2024 (base VAC); further adjustments have been reported in 2025. We confirm the exact fee at lodgement to avoid mistakes.

Student pathways at a glance

Subclass 500 — Student: Full-time study with work rights, OSHC, eligible dependants.
Subclass 590 — Student Guardian: Parent/guardian of an under-18 student.
Short study (≤ 3 months): May be possible on Visitor (600), ETA (601), or eVisitor (651)—no work rights.
