What is the Australia Skilled Migration Visa?

A points-tested pathway for qualified professionals whose occupations are in demand. The three core visas:

  • Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent: No sponsorship; live/work anywhere in Australia (PR).
  • Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated: State/territory nomination; you live/work in the nominating state (PR).
  • Subclass 491 – Skilled Work Regional: Regional nomination or eligible relative; provisional visa with a PR pathway (→191).

MATES & Working Holiday Maker — quick guide

MATES program (India only) — Subclass 403 stream

  • Who it’s for: Indian graduates & early-career professionals in targeted fields (renewables, mining, engineering, ICT, AI, fintech, ag-tech).
  • Stay length: up to 2 years in Australia.
  • How it opens: pre-application ballot. If selected, you’re invited to apply.
  • Program cap: ~3,000 places/year (subject to program settings).
  • Good to know: No employer sponsor needed to enter; documentation must be clean & on-time.

Working Holiday Maker (WHM) — 417 & 462

Two youth-mobility streams let you holiday, work and study short-term. India uses 462 and must enter a ballot for the first visa. Pakistan isn’t on 417/462 (consider Student 500, Skilled 189/190/491, Employer 482/186, Partner/Parent or National Innovation 858).
